Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) recently recognized Reliable Oil Co., Inc. as a historic business, celebrating its rich legacy in Yorktown Heights. The company was originally founded in 1939 by Louis Mastro as Reliable Ice Company. While initially focused on selling ice, the business quickly expanded to include coal sales. By 1943, the company had further diversified its offerings by selling kerosene, and in 1949, it began providing home heating oil to both homeowners and small commercial businesses.
The Mastro family business continued to grow with the involvement of Louis’s brother Frank in 1951. Frank’s sons, Roy Sr. and Joe Sr., played a pivotal role in transitioning the company from coal to oil after returning from World War II. The advancements in technology during that era made home heating more accessible, offering a new level of comfort previously only affordable to the wealthy.
“Reliable Oil Co., Inc. remains a staple in Yorktown Heights, carrying on a legacy of quality and reliability,” said Slater. “I commend the Mastro family for their dedication to the community and their continued commitment to providing essential services, and it was an honor to nominate them as a historic business; the first in the town of Yorktown.”
After 85 years of business and under the stewardship of the third generation, including grandson Louis, Reliable Oil Co., Inc. not only supplies fuel oil but also services boilers and oil tanks and addresses a variety of fuel oil-associated needs. Their services are particularly crucial during New York’s cold winter months.
“It is wonderful to see Assemblyman Matt Slater recognize reliable oil for all of their years servicing the Yorktown community. My family has been using Reliable for over 50 years and they are a true Yorktown business. They are one of the success stories of a family business that helps build not only their community but our great country.” Ed Lachterman, Supervisor of the Town of Yorktown.
“Reliable Oil has been a cornerstone of our community for 85 years. Their commitment to excellence and their recent historic recognition truly highlights their enduring legacy and unwavering dedication to serving Yorktown. Congratulations on this remarkable milestone!” said Karen Trendell, President YCOC.
“My father started this in 1939, and we’re still in business today. Soon my son will be taking over keeping it in the family for generations to come. I thank the Assemblyman for recognizing our family and the years we’ve put into this,” said Lou Mastro.
