Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) joined students, teachers and local officials at Brookside Elementary and Crompond Elementary to take part in Operation Cupid, an annual initiative by United for the Troops to send care packages and handwritten cards to active-duty service members.
Slater participated in donation pickups at Brookside Elementary on Friday, Jan. 24 and Crompond Elementary on Thursday, Jan. 30, where students gave letters and supplies to support troops stationed around the world.
“It’s inspiring to see our students come together to support our service members,” said Slater. “This tradition brings comfort to those serving far from home and instills in our youth the values of gratitude and giving back. It’s an honor to be part of this effort, and I look forward to continuing it for years to come. I commend United for the Troops for their continued dedication to this cause and appreciate the schools for encouraging students to take part in such a meaningful initiative.”
Jim Rathschmidt, co-founder of United for the Troops, said, “It’s so important to have our youth involved in our community and to understand the importance and sacrifice of our troops. By writing cards and sending care packages, we help show our appreciation and support for our military and what they do for us so far away from home.”
“We’re proud of our students for their incredible outpouring of support for our U.S. service members stationed overseas. Their efforts are a testament to their empathy and sense of civic duty,” said Dr. Ronald Hattar, superintendent of Yorktown Central School District.
