Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) stood alongside his Assembly and Senate Republican colleagues and former Acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan at the Capitol today to demand action on illegal immigration and push for legislation that would strengthen border security and restore cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
Two key legislative measures highlighted at the press conference included:
A.1528/S.1427 – A repeal of the state’s “Green Light Law” for northern border counties, allowing law enforcement to access necessary resources to secure New York’s international border.
A.2262/S.2538 (Laken’s Law) – A bill restoring cooperation between New York courts, law enforcement and federal authorities in cases involving the arrest or conviction of illegal migrants.
“Right now, if someone is here illegally and gets arrested in New York, law enforcement is prohibited from notifying ICE—it’s reckless,” said Slater. “It is reassuring to know we finally have partners on the federal level like Director Homan who prioritizes national security and public safety.”
Slater also condemned the growing financial burden of the migrant crisis, which has cost New York taxpayers billions while failing to keep communities safe.
“New York state has spent billions of dollars providing housing, food, cell phones and debit cards to migrants, which is a direct result of the sanctuary policies that make New York a magnet for illegal immigration. Meanwhile, 9 out of 10 asylum seekers are being ordered to return to their country of origin by immigration courts.”
“There has been a significant influx of drug traffickers, human traffickers and gun runners crossing the northern border under Gov. Hochul’s watch. She has done absolutely nothing while our communities bear the consequences. It’s time to put New Yorkers’ safety first by reversing the misguided sanctuary policies that prevent law enforcement from doing their job. I applaud the efforts by two New Yorkers, Director Homan and President Trump, for leading the charge to secure our border and restore law and order,” Slater concluded.
