Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) hosted his annual Vietnam Veterans Day at the New York State Capitol today, joined by Assemblyman Steve Stern, Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Assemblyman Brian Manktelow, Assemblywoman Pam Hunter and Assemblyman Brian Maher. The event honored the service and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans through a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., a Capitol tour at 1 p.m. and a formal recognition ceremony on the Assembly floor during session.
Today, an estimated 207,000 Vietnam War veterans reside in New York, making them the largest demographic group of veterans in the state. A number of them traveled to Albany to take part in this special day of appreciation and remembrance.
“Vietnam veterans answered the call to serve our nation, and today, we honor their sacrifices,” said Slater. “These men and women endured immense challenges, both in combat and upon returning home, and they continue to be an integral part of our communities. My colleagues and I will ensure their service is never forgotten and that they receive the recognition and support they have rightfully earned.”
“It was a wonderful day with all of our veterans who took the trip out to Albany—I appreciated hearing all of your stories and feeling the American spirit and pride shining through in the room,” Slater added.
During the formal recognition ceremony on the Assembly floor, Slater and his colleagues introduced attending veterans and recognized their service with an official Assembly resolution. The event served as both a tribute to Vietnam veterans and a reminder of the ongoing need to support them, whether through health care, benefits or community programs.
