New York State Assemblyman Matt Slater (R-Yorktown) today announced that he has been assigned to five key committees by Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay for the 2025-2026 Legislative Session. Slater will serve as ranking member of the Assembly Standing Committee on Election Law. In this role, he will serve as the Assembly Republican Conference’s chief policymaker on election issues in New York State. Because of his depth of experience as both a state legislator and former Yorktown Supervisor, Slater was also appointed to the Assembly’s Environmental Conservation, Health, Labor and Transportation committees.
“As the new ranking member of the Assembly Election Law Committee, I am committed to advancing legislation that strengthens election integrity,” said Slater. “This includes requiring valid government-issued photo ID to vote (A.6297); ensuring only U.S. citizens can vote in elections (A.2860); and requiring the New York State Board of Elections to verify voter citizenship through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program (A.9193).”
Slater, who has been endorsed by the New York League of Conservation Voters in the last two elections, will now be a member of the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. “As Yorktown Town Supervisor, I spearheaded the town’s Climate Smart Community designation and expanded renewable energy initiatives. I’ve been a strong advocate for combating harmful algal blooms (HABs) and introduced bill A.6266 to study pond and lake management effectiveness. Additionally, I’ve urged Governor Hochul to expand the Septic Replacement Program to benefit lake communities like Lake Peekskill and Putnam Lake. I look forward to bringing this experience to the State Assembly’s Environmental Conservation Committee.”
On health, Slater emphasized his ongoing advocacy: “I’ve been a leading advocate to enhance the health of every child in New York State by providing universal, no-cost school lunches. I believe this is a vital investment in children’s health and in the future of our state. As a former senior staffer in the State Senate, I helped organize the Senate Task Force on Opioids and Heroin and, in the State Assembly, I’ve continued to lead the fight against the opioid epidemic. Recently, I’ve also advanced bills expanding health care access (A.9780, A.9246) and postpartum depression screening (A.8977). I’m eager to continue this work on the Health Committee.” The 94th Assembly District is home to the Putnam Hospital Center, which is the largest employer in Putnam County.
In his campaigns for Yorktown Supervisor and the State Assembly, Slater has been endorsed by dozens of unions and labor organizations, the AFL-CIO, CSEA and NYSUT. “I have worked hard to build a strong knowledge of labor issues and how they affect the hardworking families that are the backbone of New York’s economy. As a chief of staff in the State Senate, I helped author the original Davis-Bacon legislation and, more recently, I introduced A.7726 to expand Davis-Bacon protections to include state reciprocity for debarment.”
Rebuilding the Hudson Valley’s transportation infrastructure was a leading priority for Assemblyman Slater during his first term. “I was pleased to serve on the Transportation Committee last session, where I was able to secure more than $30 million for infrastructure upgrades for the 94th District, including a $3.5 million investment for Route 312 in Southeast. I look forward to building on this success in my second term.”
In his first term, Assemblyman Slater served as ranking minority member of the Libraries and Education Technology Committee and participated on several key committees, including Government Operations; Labor; Oversight, Analysis and Investigation; Real Property Taxation; and Transportation.
